My Story
I wrote this book after my brother, U. S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer (BOSN-4) Edward F. Clancy Jr. passed away. While growing up, I always loved hearing stories of his Coast Guard adventures. I was also particularly proud of his thirty years of dedication to our country.
In twelve months the Southwind sailed around the world, crossing the Equator, International Date Line, the Antarctic Circle, and the Arctic circle.
Ed’s experience on the Southwind had a profound effect on his career and personal life. Years later, he and another shipmate formed the Southwind Association. Reunions were held where friendships were rekindled, and memories shared.
Family and friends were notified of Ed’s passing. Our family took comfort in hearing the many stories that his former shipmates shared. Both revered and feared by most under his leadership, Ed earned the nickname “The Bear.” It was one of endearment to his shipmates. Ed was very humble about his Coast Guard career, so hearing these stories and the impact of his influence on others was very new. But not surprising knowing my brother. It made me even more proud and created a desire to share his legacy in the hopes that others would read it and follow a path to being a shipmate as well.
